Muskoka Fat Bike Race Wrap-Up

MFBR start

On Saturday night 63 racers lined up on Huntsville’s Main Street for the inaugural Muskoka Fat Bike Race hosted by the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association.  The event was held as part of Huntsville’s SnowFest.  Main Street was closed to traffic and filled with snow, hosting a range of activities through the day including: dog sledding; skiing; snowboarding; snowshoeing; skijoring; sliding and more.

Combined with warm temperatures and foot traffic through the day the course was soft, adding an additional challenge to the event.

At 5:00 pm, the beginner categories started with 19 males and 9 females, ranging in ages from 12 to 61, racing for 30 minutes plus an additional two laps.  In the end the top finishers were:

Male:
1st – Steven Booth, 2nd – Alex Dubois, 3rd – Blake Paton
Female:
1st Tessa Jennison, 2nd – Kim Pfaff, 3rd – Marlene Campsall

Under the street lights the 6:00 pm competitive category riders lined up to ride 45 minutes, plus two additional laps.  The women’s race came down to the wire with only a few bike lengths separating first and second place.  In the men’s race it was local Huntsville Mountain Bike Association member Cole Punchard lapping nearly the entire field at least once to take the win, despite having a mid race mechanical where he was forced to change bikes for a lap.  Podium finishers in the competitive category were:

Male:
1st – Cole Punchard, 2nd – Alex Schmidt, 3rd – Darrell Prillaman
Female:
1st – Aleesha Clark, 2nd – Sarah Caylor, 3rd – Emma Polera
